Alfred and Amelia Jacoutot in front of The Grove House, built in 1893 along the county road in Montecito. Alfred and Amelia came from Louisiana, opened The Grove House as a French restaurant. It became a popular destination being a ten minute walk from the Miramar train stop. The restaurant was known for its fine French cuisine and popular social functions. Description
In 1907 Peter Riedel and Dr. Franceschi rented a full city block of land for their nursery. The location was State, Chapala, Gutierrez and Montecito Streets. It was officially named the Southern California Acclimatizing Association and informally called the State Street Nursery. At the center of this block was the Spiritualist House. In 1912 Peter Riedel was granted permission to live in the abandoned residence owned by the Spiritualists. The driveway was lined with orange trees which were later moved to the F.F. Peabody Estate.
