Description
In 1907 Peter Riedel and Dr. Franceschi rented a full city block of land for their nursery. The location was State, Chapala, Gutierrez and Montecito Streets. It was officially named the Southern California Acclimatizing Association and informally called the State Street Nursery. At the center of this block was the Spiritualist House. In 1912 Peter Riedel was granted permission to live in the abandoned residence owned by the Spiritualists. The driveway was lined with orange trees which were later moved to the F.F. Peabody Estate. As a young man in his thirties Peter Riedel published a catalog titled "Rare And Interesting Plants." The catalog promoted the sale of nursery stock and increased his reputation as a plantsman in the community. Also at this time, many wealthy people were coming to Montecito and Peter was able to expand his landscaping career by designing and constructing the gardens of many Montecito estates. While working on various estates at one time Peter Riedel traveled from job to job on his motorcycle. "He customarily wore a yellow corduroy jacket over trousers that were tucked into calf-length boots. The wide front brim of his Stetson hat would flatten above his face as he streaked recklessly at high speed over the country roads.
