Description
Photograph taken in the Pacific Ocean around 1950 is an image of Allan Hancock and two others on the Velero IV. Hancock started the construction of Velero IV as a dedicated marine research vessel for the University of Southern California as soon as possible after World War II. National Iron Works in San Diego completed construction in 1948, and she became one of the most advanced research vessels of her time. She was actively involved in research through 1985, ranging from Bodega Bay, California all the way south to Costa Rica. She is currently operated as a charter vessel by Velero IV Charters, LLC, in Edmonds, Washington. The pneumatic A-frame mounted aft, visible here, could be used to haul ocean-bottom samples onto graduated mesh sorting screens. Identifier on back of photo: 6833 8C-3.

Benthoscope
Date Created
Circa 1949
Description
Photograph taken in the Pacific Ocean off California around 1949 is an image of the Benthoscope, a manned deep-sea diving vessel. Otis Barton designed the Benthoscope, a 7,000 pound steel sphere, to be able to safely carry an observer as deep as 6,500 feet beneath the ocean. He had hoped to at least double the record of 3,028 feet set by Dr. William Beebe in 1934. The Benthoscope was tested and modified at Hancock College of Aeronautics in Santa Maria, and its record-breaking dive in 1949 was carried out in cooperation with the Allan Hancock Foundation's research vessel, Velero IV. Unfortunately, the lights failed at 4,500 feet, and Barton decided not to press on to his goal. The lessons learned from this dive led to the development of the Benthograph automated deep-sea camera.

Circa 1950
Description
Photograph is an image of G. Allan Hancock and research engineer Dr. Maurice Nelles with the benthograph, an automated camera for deep-sea exploration. This photo was probably taken in 1950 at Hancock Field in Santa Maria, California, where the benthograph was built. The benthograph was inspired by an earlier attempt with a manned diving vessel called a benthoscope, which broke a record for manned deep diving but failed to produce useful photographs. Hancock commissioned Dr. Nelles to produce an automated camera that could operate at great depths. The benthograph was tested in 1950 and produced hundreds of deep-sea photographs before being lost off Catalina in 1952.

Description
Negative created at Hancock Field in Santa Maria, California is an image of an instructor and a cadet using a Link Trainer. Link Trainers were early analog flight simulators built by Link Aviation Devices, for the purpose of training pilots to fly by instruments alone. The trainers moved in response to the pilot's controls, and gave feedback through an instrument panel. The canopy could be used to simulate blind flying. Instructors had access to real-time data from the trainer, and could communicate with the pilot via headphones. Because most Link Trainers were painted blue with yellow control surfaces, they were also called "blue boxes".

Description
Photograph taken off Santa Cruz Island, California in 1949 is an image of Otis Barton inside the Benthoscope, talking with Dr. Maurice Nelles. Barton designed the Benthoscope, a 7,000 pound steel sphere, to be able to safely carry an observer as deep as 6,500 feet beneath the ocean.
