Mary Winters was born in Ashton, Illinois, and came to the Santa Maria Valley on a wagon train in 1871. Before her marriage at the age of 16, she taught at the first school in Point Sal. A longtime member of the Minerva Club, she was honored by the club on her 80th birthday. |

Negative created in the Santa Maria Valley is an image of SMVRR locomotive 205. The Santa Maria Valley Railroad purchased this locomotive from the San Joaquin and Eastern Railroad in 1933, and it stayed in service until 1950. SMVRR began purchasing General Electric diesel locomotives in 1948. This locomotive was donated to be a public display at the Santa Maria Fairgrounds. In 1983, after deteriorating and becoming a safety hazard, it was donated to a group in Oregon to be restored. |
