Grace Bumbry, soloist with the Ojai Festival Symphony Orchestra, Aaron Copland conducting: 1960s ; Miss Bumbry has enjoyed a sensational career on the European continent where she has been guest artist with all of the leading opera companies. In 1961, she sang the role of Venus in "Tannhauser" at the Bayreuth Festival and returned yearly to Bayreuth as a guest artist. Miss Bumbry made her New York debut in Carnegie Hall in the fall of 1962 and was well received by the public and the press. Following two concert tours of the United States with guest appearances with the Chicago Lyric Opera Company the critical reviews placed her as one of the great artists of our time.
