Detail View: Edson Smith Photo Collection: Oakleigh Thorne Estate

Title:
Oakleigh Thorne Estate
Description:
Oakleigh Thorne estate "Las Tejas" built in the late 1890s on a parcel between Hot Springs Road and Picacho Lane in Montecito. Oakleigh and Helen Thorne purchased the propery in 1917 and soon began remodeling the house and grounds. Mrs. Thorne's main interest was the garden design and soon made Las Tejas the highlight of weekly garden tours. This section of the garden began below the balcony of the house and extended towards the ocean in cascading terraces of pools and lawns, ending at the pavilion with three arches, circa 1928.
