Photograph is an image of the vessel Velero III, owned by Allan Hancock. Velero III was built to Hancock's specifications by Craig Shipbuilding in Long Beach in 1931. It was employed in oceanographic research in the Pacific Ocean. During World War II, it was used as a patrol vessel by the U.S. Navy. After the war, it was purchased by the American Independent Oil Company and converted into a luxury cruiser for the Sheik of Kuwait.
