This photo was taken on May 26, 1950, probably at Hancock Field in Santa Maria, California, where the benthograph was built. Description on back of photo: "Capt. Allan Hancock, left, and Dr. Maurice Nelles with S.C.'s new benthograph designed for deep sea research. It will be used with the marine laboratory ship, Velero IV. Captain Hancock, director of the Allan Hancock Foundation and skipper of the Velero IV, holds the electrically operated motion picture camera designed for use within the benthograph.
